CIPARS

What is it?

The Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance, or CIPARS, is a Government of Canada program that collects, analyzes, and communicates trends in antimicrobial use and AMR development in both human and animal populations across Canada [1].

As of 2017, Health Canada requires the annual sales of medically important antimicrobials for animal use to be reported in the Veterinary Antimicrobial Sales Reporting (VASR) system [2]. CIPARS is able to integrate the data and assess links between antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance, as well as detect trends across and within animal populations [1].

Challenges

  • CIPARS currently focuses on broiler chickens, turkeys, and grower-finisher pigs, with little data on beef cattle. Data on Canadian feedlot beef cattle started being collected in 2019 [3]. More beef cattle data is necessary to monitor antimicrobial resistance sufficiently in the beef cattle industry.

How Does it Prevent AMR?

The information collected by CIPARS supports measures to contain the emergence and spread of AMR among humans, animals, and retail meat across Canada. The overall aim of the program is to prolong the effectiveness of antimicrobials.
