Human-AI Interaction: Special Topic <\/strong>(ENGG 519, University of Calgary)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This course explores the design and evaluation of collaborative systems where humans and artificial intelligence (AI) team up to solve complex problems. Moving beyond traditional human computer interaction, students will confront the critical challenges of integrating modern AI\u2014including large language models\u2014into clinical workflows. Through analysis of recent scientific literature, the curriculum focuses on the core principles of explainability (XAI), trust calibration, and responsible AI governance. The course emphasizes a hands-on approach; students will learn to prototype novel human-AI interactions and formulate research-quality evaluation plans. Ultimately, this course prepares future engineers to create safe, effective, and human-centered AI systems that augment clinical expertise and improve outcomes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Human Factors Engineering and User-Centered Design<\/a><\/strong> (BMEN 631<\/a>, Graduate-level, University of Calgary)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students will explore human cognition and apply theoretical frameworks to understand how individuals interact with their environment, equipment, and one another to make decisions and complete tasks. By gaining insight into human capabilities and limitations, students will be equipped to design more effective systems that support healthcare providers, minimizing errors and improving patient outcomes. The design and development process will be demonstrated, with an emphasis on the importance of end-user participation in system design.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
