Academic Lead
Dr. Merkebe G. Demissie
Dr. Demissie serves as the Academic Lead of the Transportation and Health Transdisciplinary Research Hub at the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering (SSE). In this role, he provides strategic and scholarly leadership to advance the Hub’s mission of addressing emerging challenges at the intersection of mobility, health, equity, and technology. Dr. Demissie specializes in data-driven transportation systems analysis, travel demand modelling, and equitable mobility planning. His research integrates deep learning, digital twins, and spatial analysis to explore how transportation systems influence access to health care and well-being across diverse populations. Under his leadership, Dr. Demissie is helping position the Hub as a transdisciplinary platform that leverages engineering, health sciences, and data innovation to design sustainable, inclusive transportation systems that enhance health outcomes for all communities.
