Admissions Update May 12,2020 and clarifications-PLEASE READ

Dear Applicants,

It is is 7:00 pm and all of the letters to those who were invited for an “interview” have been sent out. For those of you who were successful today-Congratulations!!! For those of you who did not receive the news you were hoping for, I hope you were accepted elsewhere; and more importantly hold your head up high and persevere.

This was another competitive year. For example, the total median standardized score of Albertans offered was approximately 224. The difference between the last person sent an offer and the first person on the wait list is 0.24. The different between the first person on the the waitlist and the cut-off for being unsuccessful is a mere 8.5 points.

Please read your offer letter carefully and I recommend taking care of your “to dos” as quickly as possible.
There was an error in the offer letter for the timing of the deposit. Deposits are due May 25th, 2020 Registered cheque and send my registered mail Please do not drop off your cheque at the admission office.

Please direct any questions to ucmedapp@ucalgary.ca.

1. Quick recap:

Total applications submitted: 1721
Invited to interview: 579
Total new “seats” available: 128-30
Total offers sent out May 12, 2020: 170
Total waitlist letters sent May 12, 2020: 148
TOTAL ACCEPTED May 12, 2020 7 pm: 35

Please do not ask for a further breakdown beyond this.

Last year we sent out a total of 276 offers to reach our target number of 139. So, yes, there are years we go deep into the waitlist but every year is different.

2. If possible, please make a decision quickly to be fair to those who are on the waitlist.

3. Pay attention to our deferral policy and the deadline. Deferrals are rarely granted and are at the discretion of the Director of Admissions.

4. Please do not ask where you sit on the waitlist. We do not disclose that information.

I want to thank all the applicants for being on this journey with the admissions office. It was a unique year with some challenges for everyone and we all appreciated the patience and kind words that came out way. We will always strive to do better. Finally, continue to support each other regardless of today’s decisions… we all need someone to lean on whether it be today, tomorrow, or sometime in the future.

I will update the blog in approximately a week with numbers.
