RE: Choosing CR vs numerical or letter grades and application to U of C Medicine

The University of Calgary’s or other institutions decision to allow at the discretion of the student to elect one course from their Fall 2020 term  or other terms does not change the policy that we have in the MD Admissions office in terms of minimum credits to determine a full-time year for calculating their GPA on the MD application.

The student needs to determine if they will still have the minimum 2 full-time years in order to be eligible to apply to the MD program, keeping in mind that full-time years means at minimum 24 credits taken from September – April with at least 18 of those credits associated with a numerical or letter grade (not pass/fail or CR/no-CR).

It is important for applicants to be aware of our policy when deciding on the option of taking a credit rather than a numerical or letter grade as this may affect their eligibility and whether that year will be used in the GPA calculation. The student will have to decide how that could impact them when needing to meet minimum graded credits if they intend on applying to our program or other programs with specific requirements.
