UCAN calculated GPA-Why is there a discrepancy from what I was expecting?

Hello everyone, there is one month to go before the submission deadline. At this stage, strong applicants are typically at least 70% done their application and/or almost ready to submit.

One of the questions we are getting quite often is applicants wondering about their GPA calculation. Over 95% of the time the calculation in UCAN is correct. So why may this be happening to you?

1. Technical Reasons

There are some key boxes that need to be checked depending on your situation in order for things to “happen” within UCAN

a) For the system to drop your lowest undergraduate year you need to check:
Have either already received a Bachelor’s degree or anticipate receiving one by June 30 2021

b) For the system to exclude your Winter 2020 you need to check:
I have completed coursework during the Winter 2020 term for which my institution granted credits only, not grades

c) If you are using the ten year exclusion rule, remember you need two full time undergraduate years in the last 10 years

2.GPA conversion is different than at your home institution

Please refer to Appendix 1 in the Applicant Manual which outlines the weigh we convert numerical and letter grades into GPA

3. Our Graduate GPA policy has changed

Please read the requirements in the Applicant manual which outlines the criteria for a graduate GPA to be included in the overall GPA calculation. This change will be most readily apparent to previous applicants because your GPA from previous years may change.

4. You have P/F courses in an undergrad yer and UCAN is not recognizing this in your total credit load.

Please contact the office as we need to override these
