On Mon, July 17, 2023 our invited talk will be given by Kristian Morin. Kris is currently head of SLAM at XYZ Reality. He was formerly at Hilti Group and also at Leica Geosystems / Hexagon. His talk is titled: “Surveying the high-tech frontier for spatial success”. Surveying and geomatics underpin a wide variety of technologies and applications in the high-tech industry. Yet detailed understanding of spatial data, navigation techniques and uncertainty remain elusive in many development teams. This presentation will highlight how the skills we (e.g., surveyors and geomatics engineers) bring are making the difference in successful high-tech products and services.

Single rooms in the International House are no longer available within the reserved room block. It may still be worthwhile checking with stay@ucalgary.ca if there is any availability outside of the block. Two-bedroom apartments should be still available to book through the online system. Our block is reserved until Mon, June 19. For three-bedroom apartments or any other bookings outside of the dates in the online system, please e-mail stay@ucalgary.ca and specify that you are with SaGES.

I have also updated the accommodation page with off-campus options reasonably close to the university.

Our invited speaker for Tuesday, July 18, 2023 will be Brian Ballantyne from BoundaryIntelligence. The title of his talk is “The spatial extent of Aboriginal title in Canada: parcels & boundaries”. Aboriginal title is being asserted/recognized to many parcels across Canada, parcels that were never ceded by Indigenous peoples to the Crown. Parcels include Crown land, watercourses and freehold land. Five court decisions and six case studies show that if boundaries are defined, then Aboriginal title has meaning; if not, then claims flounder.

Geoff Banham from the Alberta geodetic control unit has been confirmed as the guest/invited speaker for Wed, July 19, 2023. His talk is titled: “NATRF2022 – what Canada and the provinces are up to”. Canada and the United States are planning to adopt the North American Reference Frame (NATRF) 2022 in 2025. This presentation outlines the steps Canada (and the provinces) are taking to support the change to NATRF2022.

The call for abstracts is now closed. Thanks to everyone who submitted. We received submissions from institutions in twenty different states/provinces/countries: South Carolina, Maine, Alberta, Ontario, Italy, Pakistan, South Korea, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Jersey, Oregon, Tennessee, New Brunswick, New York, Ohio, Louisiana, Nebraska, Georgia, Florida, and Iowa. The technical program committee is currently reviewing the abstracts. Authors will be notified by Fri, April 21.
